Perhaps no other locale better evokes the phrase la dolce vita than Bellagio, the fabled Italian resort town known as the pearl of Lake Como. Ever since the early years of the Roman Empire when the poet Virgil wrote about the lake and Pliny the Younger built a hilltop summer villa, visitors have celebrated the sweetness of life in this idyllic lakefront town in Lombardy.
As the 19th-century French novelist Stendhal wrote from his room at Villa Melzi, "I lift my gaze to the most beautiful view in the world," which is a sentiment immediately understood from the perspective of the Winston Churchill Suite at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni.
With a sly smile, the bellman slides open the window shutters of the palatial suite to reveal a resplendent landscape of Italianate gardens framing Lake Como shimmering in the midday sun. Emerald-green foothills dotted with lakefront villas and towering cypress give way to the snow-covered Alps in the distance — and, right on cue, birdsong fills the suite.
Situated on the cape of the promontory that bisects Lake Como, the majestic belle epoque hotel was built in 1853 as a summer villa for a Milanese family before its conversion 20 years later into Bellagio's grandest hotel. Throughout its history, the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni has been home to European and Russian aristocracy as well as numerous luminaries and entertainers.
For the past 100 years, the hotel has been owned by the Bucher family, whose hotelier experience spans five generations. As managing proprietor Gianfranco Bucher states, "Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni has always been a home for its owners and its guests, many of whom return each season."
In cultivating the atmosphere of an opulent holiday villa open from April to November, the Bucher family is blessed with a staff of gracious professionals who exhibit the uncanny ability to intuit their guests' desires, whether it be an Aperol spritz on the terrace or the services of a sleek, mahogany Venetian taxi boat for a cruise around the lake.
The stately public rooms feature coffered ceilings and trompe l'oeil frescoes alongside French wall tapestries and antique Persian carpets. Portraits in gilded frames are juxtaposed with contemporary sculpture, and art nouveau furnishings glimmer beneath Murano chandeliers. A grand marble staircase leads to the magnificent Royal Hall, where breakfast is served in a neoclassical setting befitting a royal wedding.
In one of those rare instances where the interior spaces are as extraordinary as the surrounding landscape, it's sometimes difficult to choose whether to remain happily ensconced and coddled within the hotel or to wander the lush grounds redolent with peonies, wisteria, jasmine and camellia.
Notable neighbors
Benefitting from a salutary microclimate, Bellagio supports an abundance of Alpine and Mediterranean vegetation that includes olive, laurel, cypress, chestnut and mulberry trees and silk worms. For generations, the region has supported a prosperous textile industry that produces the finest silks and cotton, evidence of which is apparent in hotel linens that caress the skin.
The hotel's indoor pool adjoins a bathing pavilion that leads to the outdoor pool area complete with sandy beach and lake diving platform. Hillside tennis courts are surrounded by the gardens of the neighboring Villa Serbelloni (now owned by the Rockefeller Foundation), which is reputedly the site of Pliny the Younger's villa.
Nearby notable villas include Villa Melzi, located just beyond the Lido and the cobblestoned stairways of Bellagio's city center. A lakefront avenue of plane trees leads to the commanding residence built in 1808 set amid a series of English and Oriental gardens. Accessible by motorboat, the 18th-century Villa del Balbianello became the private museum of the North Pole explorer Guido Monzino, though it remains equally well known for its cameos in the James Bond and "Star Wars" film franchises.
Private motorboat cruises afford glimpses of the villas owned by magnates and celebrities, though few locales are as popular as Isola Comacina, where the convivial inn owner performs a daily fire ritual at lunch to free the isle from an 800-year-old curse.
Perched on the waterfront, the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni's Michelin-starred restaurant, Mistral, is helmed by chef Ettore Bocchia, whose molecular gastronomy fuses perfectly with the polished tableside service that executes an exemplary canard a la presse, which is followed by crepes Suzette served with liquid nitrogen vanilla ice cream.
As the sun sets, music from the Grand Salon's resident trio floats on the gentle breeze. Whether it's an evening walk in the garden or another glass of Champagne or simply slipping between silky-soft bed linens, what's inarguable is the sweetness of life at Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni.

Kanoo launches two luxury villa projects in Jumeirah
The Kanoo Group, a UAE-based family group of companies with operations across the GCC, has announced the launch of two new luxury compound villa projects – Haya and Alyazzi, in the Jumeriah area of Dubai.
These new projects come in the wake of the success of Kanoo's debut villa compound project, Al Safeena Villas, which is located in a prime location in the city, the group said in a statement.
Designed by AD&D and constructed by Al Ghurair Contracting, the new rental villas offer open-plan layout, with three-bedrooms ranging in size from 4,036Ssqft to 4,112sqft, while four-bedroom villas range from 4,760sqft to 5,014sqft, in addition to a maid's room, it added.
The homes feature ‘modern and contemporary elements that give each home a sleek look, focused around luxury and modern family living', the statement continued. The projects consist of five and eight stand-alone villas in Compound 2 – Haya Villas, and Compound 3 – Alyazzi Villas, respectively.
Located off Beach Road in Al Safeena, the projects are in close proximity to landmark areas in Dubai, such as the Sunset Mall, Jumeriah Beach, Dubai Canal and Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa. Despite this, they offer residents a peaceful environment, The Kanoo Group said. Residents will also have private landscaped gardens, while also being able to socialise within a close-knit neighbourhood, it added.
“Kanoo Property constantly monitors and analyses the rapidly evolving market dynamics. We have an expert team who handles diverse property solutions to meet all our consumer needs,” said Girish Siddappa, senior property manager, The Kanoo Group – UAE and Oman.
“These additions to our world-class projects provide the complete living environment, with large and spacious layouts, high-end finishing and fittings, and sustainable and environmentally-friendly design to enhance our offering for tenants, which are complete and ready for handover.”
He added that there are currently 11 out of 13 villas which are already rented out within a few months' time since the official launch.

Seven Seaside Getaways for This Fall
A vacation to a beautiful seaside destination doesn’t have to blow your budget. Travelers who plan their visit for the right time — shoulder or off-season, perhaps, or on a weekday — can find plenty of deals in oceanside locales known for their high prices.
When it comes to Europe, for example, Simone Amorico, an owner of Access Italy, said that the prices drop by at least 25 percent in upscale spots like the Amalfi Coast after the middle of September. Besides the lower prices, there are other benefits to a post peak-season trip.
“You have a higher chance of getting room upgrades and reservations at popular restaurants,” he said. “Stores also offer discounts because they want to get rid of their merchandise from the season.” Overall, Mr. Amorico said that travelers can look forward to a trip with fewer crowds and plenty of opportunities to interact with locals in a relaxed way.
Here are seven options for your own luxury beach escape.
California dreaming
In Santa Monica, Hotel Casa del Mar, an exclusive beach club in the 1920s with panoramas of the Pacific Ocean, has an offer where guests who book three nights get a fourth night free. A daily $75 breakfast credit is included and can be used toward room service or at the property’s Coast restaurant. Bookings start from $489 a night after the discount. The promotion is valid through the end of the year.
A long weekend in Bermuda
Bermuda is less than a two-and-a-half hour flight from New York or Boston, and CheapCaribbean has an air-inclusive package to the British island territory from both cities. In addition to airfare, the package includes a three-night stay at the Fairmont Southampton, a nearly 100-acre beach resort full of coconut palm trees. Bookings are valid from Nov. 1 to Dec. 30, and start at $629 per person. The package is also available with flights from Washington, Chicago and Philadelphia with prices starting at $679 per person.
A Brazilian beach escape
Located in the small beachside village of Trancoso, in Brazil’s Bahia state, UXUA Casa Hotel & Spa, a collection of 11 fishermen’s casas, offers three-, five- or seven-night Ultimate UXUA Experience packages, which include a welcome drink; a scenic boat trip to remote Espelho beach, considered to be one of the country’s most beautiful beaches); lunch at the property’s Asian-fusion restaurant, Silvinha’s; a private cooking class on Bahian cuisine; and a daily massage. Prices start at $475 a night for two people, and you can book at any time.
A private couples getaway in Bali
For those up for a far-flung seaside holiday, the Belmond Jimbaran Puri, in Bali, has a Suite Life promotion, which includes a stay in a villa with a private terrace and pool, butler service, breakfast, dinner for two at the property’s Tunjung restaurant, a couple’s massage and a one-way airport transfer. Bookings are valid indefinitely, and start from $550 a night for two people.
Fun in the Mexican sun
In Los Cabos, the Westin Los Cabos Resort Villas & Spa, which overlooks the Sea of Cortez and has three pools and a private beach, is offering the Los Cabos Getaway package. It includes accommodations in a two-bedroom villa, a private sunset sailing trip and a private tequila tasting. The promotion is valid through the end of the year, and bookings start at $169 a night.
Wellness options on the Amalfi Coast
Two properties on the Amalfi Coast are offering wellness-focused packages in October and early November.

Three builders offering one-story villas in Sumner County
Everyone loves the privacy of a single-family house, but not everyone likes everything that comes with it, including the price and a big yard to mow. And growing numbers of homeowners don't want any stairs.
Luckily for them, three home builders are offering new one-level villas in Sumner County.
"A lot of people don't want a lot of square footage but they want high-end comfort," said Jesse Hubling, sales manager for Dalamar Homes. The company is building 18 villas in the Berry Hill Villas neighborhood, located at 58 Cobbler Circle in Hendersonville. Prices start in the high $200,000s.
That's below the average home price in Sumner County, which was $305,724 in July, according to the Williamson County Association of Realtors, which tracks prices across the region.
David Weekley Homes recently introduced a new line of one-story villas in Hendersonville's Durham Farms community, 351 Azalea Circle in Hendersonville. Prices begin in the high $200,000s.
Beginning in September, Goodall Homes is launching construction of a new phase of villas at Millstone, 447 Carriage House Lane in Hendersonville. Prices have not been announced.
Goodall also offered villas at the Villas of Foxland Crossing, 2109 Sullivan St. in Gallatin, and other locations
"We are currently sold out of villas in Sumner County, and there's always a demand," said Todd Reynolds, vice president of Goodall Homes.
Villas are a popular alternative to a traditional single-family house, he said.
"Villas feel like a regular house, something people are familiar with," said Reynolds.
Goodall, Weekely Homes and Dalamar build their villas in pairs, an arrangement that allows them to have smaller lots, and lower prices, than many single family homes. Placing attached garages between them ensures privacy, said Craig Neal, lead sales consultant in Durham Farms for David Weekley Homes.
Villas are increasingly popular with home buyers. Dalamar has just seven remaining in Berry Hill. In Durham Farms, Weekley Homes began making sales as soon as its villas were introduced.
"One-story homes are in huge demand," said Neal.
Villas can be a bit smaller than many single-family homes, but they aren't cramped. In Durham Farms, David Weekley Homes offers villas ranging from 1,734 to 1,923 square feet. They have from three to five bedrooms.
Dalamar offers one-level villas in Berry Hill with about 1,700 square feet of living space. A larger floor plan is also available, with 2,500 square feet of space and an upstairs bedroom, bath and bonus area.
Goodall's villas range from about 1,600 square feet for a one-level home to 2,100 square feet for a villa with an optional upstairs bonus area, said Reynolds.
Villas are especially popular with people looking for a lock-and-leave, maintenance-free lifestyle, including downsizers as well as grandparents who may have homes in different locations and spend just part of the year in Sumner County.
Villas are growing in popularity with younger age groups, as well, said Hubling.
"Recently, we're getting more couples and singles who don't want as many bedrooms," he said.

A Surprising Hotel Brand Luxury Travelers Need To Know
Dukes Hotel in London is arguably the most famous place to have a martini in the entire world. It’s the very spot where James Bond creator Ian Fleming drank his while ruminating on famed character 007’s penchant for the drink. It’s where white-tuxedoed staff roll a cart filled with gins and vermouths (and organic lemons imported especially from Italy) right to your chair in the stately library style bar, and shake (or stir) your custom drink to order. They have been doing this for many years, before the “mixology” and craft cocktail crazes took over. But it’s not just drinks: the boutique hotel is great, classic Britannia luxury with a fabulous location in tony Mayfair/St. James, steps from the bespoke shopping of Jermyn Street, very close to Green Park and Buckingham Palace. Dukes Hotel is a top choice for business or leisure visitors to London, and it is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. (NOTE: I was a paying guest at Dukes and did not accept any free rooms or travel or martinis from hotels when researching this article).
Last year I was doing a feature for Whisky Advocate Magazine on 10 great hotels around the world for whiskey lovers, and I found a charming spot in Dublin, the family-owned Brooks Hotel. With less than a hundred rooms and a marquee downtown location for exploring the heart of the city on foot, Brooks is a warm, intimate property, and home to the acclaimed Francesca’s restaurant, with its own elaborate private chef’s garden in County Wicklow supplying fresh ingredients. All rooms are decorated with handcrafted Irish wooden furniture, sumptuous fabrics and modern Irish artworks. Brooks’ award-winning Jasmine Bar is a whiskey fantasy, with over 70 Irish selections, including one of just 114 single cask bottles of Willie Napier 44-year old released, back in 1964. There are more than 100 other whiskies from the US, Scotland, Sweden, New Zealand, Japan, Australia, Holland, South Africa and even Sri Lanka. Francesca’s is locally famous for its homemade Irish brown bread, and all overnight stays include the deliciously gourmet take on the traditional full Irish breakfast. Brooks is the kind of hidden gem I love to discover as a traveler, and it too is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
These are just two similar experiences I have had in recent years that made me start to wonder what this association is all about. I went and got the answer to that question, and it turns out that Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) is a great tool for today’s upscale traveler. Recent studies have shown that travelers are increasingly curious, focused more on unique experiences, and going further off the beaten path, and this demographic meshes well with the SLH aesthetic. At the same time, information overload has hit travelers hard, and instead of making planning easier, the internet has in many cases increased the amount of time it takes to do trip planning and research and left many wanders scratching their head in confusion. This is one of the same key reasons for the renaissance of the well-informed travel agent, which I have documented extensively in these pages at Forbes (read “Why You Need a Travel Agent” here).
Here’s’ the bottom line: Google “Luxury Boutique Hotels Rome” and you will get well over 12 million hits. Try visiting even a small fraction of those and it’s a year long project. But visit SLH.com and check the Eternal City and you’ll quickly find the one super chic answer you didn’t even know you were looking for: Fendi Private Suites, an over the top 7-room temple to style in the beating heart of the city center, with suites located over the iconic fashion brand’s flagship store in Palazzo Fendi, a former aristocratic mansion residence. With a hip restaurant, bar, rooftop terrace, Fendi furniture in every suite, personal shopping and signature “everything is possible service” this is one of the most unique luxury hotels in the world, but few travelers, even regular visitors to Rome, know about it. Now you do. But that is just one example of smaller being better. Another is SLH member Petit St. Vincent, the acclaimed private island resort that is perennially ranked as one the best of the best luxury spots in the entire Caribbean.

Anguilla's CuisinArt Is Making a Comeback
Long one of the Caribbean’s havens for foodies, the luxe CuisinArt Golf Resort and Spa is making a comeback in Anguilla.
The 91-suite, seven-villa resort, which shuttered in the wake of last year’s Hurricane Irma, is planning to officially reopen on Nov. 1, according to a spokesperson for the resort.
The Rendezvous Bay property will reopen “fully restored,” with “fresh design updates, transformed interiors, expanded golf and spa programming, and new dining venues,” according to a statement.
“It is with great pride that we announce the triumphant return of CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa,” Stephane Zaharia, President & Managing Director of CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa, told Caribbean Journal. “Hurricane Irma presented a humbling experience, but one that also allowed us to reassess and make changes to ready the resort for its next chapter. Guests new and returning will enjoy a fresh coastal chic design, as well as heightened amenities across the resort, from enhanced Golf and Spa to new dining venues and sustainability efforts. We look forward to welcoming guests back to Anguilla this November as we carry the CuisinArt legacy into the next generation.”
The interiors will reopen completely redesigned, with a new entrance, new lounging areas and new loungers and private cabanas.
The resort’s original lobby bar will be reborn as “Kazbar,” a Moroccan-style space, while the property is also adding a new 5,000-square-foot meeting space.
Changes to the rooms include a new “chic coastal aesthetic,” with wood-style flooring, handmade headboards and floor-to-ceiling windows, while the resort’s penthouses and villas are also getting a new look designed and furnished by Roche-Bobois.
All rooms will include Frette linens, Nespresso machines and other amenities.
And yes, the resort’s signature culinary offering will improve, too, with a new eatery called Mosaic, a pan-Mediterranean menu at Santorini and a Caribbean-focused offering at the becah bar.
The CuisinArt is also relaunching its 27,000-square-foot Spa by CuisinArt, with a new spa menu, new specialty treatments, an updated fitness center and a range of fitness classes from kickboxing to aqua conditioning.
CuisinArt’s modern-contemporary sister hotel in Anguilla, The Reef by CuisinArt, reopened earlier this year.

These villas in the Maldives have slides
A luxury resort in the Maldives is sure to appeal to the child in all of us – as the incredible villas feature slides that guests can take straight down and into a shimmering blue lagoon.
Soneva Jani, a resort that opened just over a year ago in the Maldives, is built around the 150-acre island of Medhufaru. There are 24 water villas and one island village in a 5.6km lagoon, which is one of the largest in the Maldives. Each one includes a 13-metre private pool on the outdoor deck, where lucky guests can relax as they look out over the lagoon. If getting straight in the crystal clear ocean is more appealing, then you can hop on the amazing slides that take you down into the water.
Since Soneva Jani has a focus on preserving the eco-system, the pools use seawater with UV filtration and the villas are built over the floor of the lagoon so there is no damage to the reef. If you want to admire the complex ecosystem below, the overwater villas also have three different glass-bottomed areas so you can check out views of the water from all angles.
For anyone looking up, the master bedrooms even have retractable roofs that make stargazing easy and enjoyable. The resort also features the first overwater observatory in the Maldives, where guests can go and learn more about the skies with the help of the resident astronomer.
If you want to sneak in a bit of culture, the resort also provides the first open-air overwater cinema in the Maldives, so you can hang out on the beach and check out some new and classic cinema. To help protect nesting turtles and wildlife, guests can listen to the film with Bluetooth headphones.

4 Enchanting Moroccan Villas by French Duo Studio KO
The superstar architectural pair is perhaps best known for their evocative, minimalist villas—and it's easy to see why.
Olivier Marty and Karl Fournier of Paris-based Studio KO are architects who don’t like following trends or shouting about having a signature style, but their texturally engaging architecture has won them many famous fans. "We wish for there to be no KO style, but a KO attitude," says Fournier. His partner Marty explains that they'd rather come up with the best solution to a problem, rather than impose their own formal language.
Perhaps it’s this independent streak that’s put them in favor with clients such as Italian aristocrat Marella Agnelli and former director of Hermès Patrick Guerrand-Hermès, who commissioned Studio KO to design their homes; or celebrity hotelier André Balazs, who hired them to design his London hotel Chiltern Firehouse.
In late 2017, they completed the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech—a 43,000-square-foot museum and cultural center that pays tribute to the works of the late and great fashion icon.
While they've worked on projects around the world, the duo has an affinity for Morocco—they have an office in Marrakesh—and have created a number of remarkable private villas with powerful architectural forms there.
The duo’s anti-brand approach means that every project they work on has its own distinct character, where the architecture becomes the best part of the interior design.
In many of their projects, the texture of the building’s surfaces—materials rooted in rural architecture such as unpolished stone, dry earth, a hammered iron basin, and rough-hewn beams—speak louder than statement furniture or décor. Recently, Studio KO has published a book showcasing their work. We take a look at four Studio KO-designed villas in Morocco included in their monograph.
Villa K
In the small town of Tagadert, looking to views of the Atlas Mountains, is this villa with a simple perpendicular pool and a facade comprised of enigmatic, cubic modules that echo the old dwellings of the nearby village.
Villa E
Red stone walls, reminiscent of structures from medieval times, are used in the construction of this villa in Ourika Valley. Conceived with a narrow glass window that cuts through the interiors from floor to ceiling, the light that enters the home has a sundial effect, and pans across the rooms over the course of the day.
Villa D
This monolithic villa in the town of Al Ouidane has a chapel that takes the form of a black cube, which can be accessed through a side breach of a larger cube that serves as the main entrance. Because its art collector owner dislikes stairs, and didn’t want traditional windows, Studio KO concealed the stairs within the "second skin" of the house, so they disappeared into the thickness of a wall, and used narrow slits and small apertures in place of conventional openings.
Villa DL
Located near the peaceful seaside village of Ghazoua, this villa has small roofless courtyards, and a central patio reminiscent of the types found in ancestral farmsteads in the nearby countryside.

An Idyllic Grecian Island Getaway
For a memorable Grecian getaway, why not go off the beaten track? Skip the crowded vacation spots, the overrated resorts, and visit the small, sleepy, coastal towns on the island of Corfu.
While one of the first islands to open to global tourism in the 1960s, Corfu isn’t as crowded as you might think. The island remains rich in unspoiled stretches of infamous coast and quaint inland towns that you can visit for a more immersive yet intimate and quiet Greek holiday. Carpeted by lush, wild olive trees and dotted with historical, whitewashed buildings, Corfu is one island that should be on top of your island-travel bucket list.
Corfu is an eclectic combination of the cosmopolitan and historical, with posh resorts and vibrant streets juxtaposed with Byzantine-era churches and Venetian-style fortresses. From beach-combing to sight-seeing to sailing and on to wining and dining, if you’re looking for an unforgettable Greek vacation, you can definitely find something to love about Corfu.
A Greek getaway for every taste and budget
Whether you’re out with the family or in for a mix of business and pleasure, a good place to come home to in Corfu is Krouzeri Beach Luxury Apartments and Villas. Sophisticated yet still boasting of that Mediterranean beach vibe, Krouzeri’s sea-view apartments offer the best vistas on the island. This is probably because Krouzeri offers the most magnificent place for sight-seeing, right from its beautifully furnished and unmistakably Mediterranean luxury rooms and villas.
Each apartment or villa has a clean, wide, airy feel and an open layout that allows you to take in the beauty of the Mediterranean Sea beyond. You can also enjoy fun-filled days soaking in the Corfu experience through bicycle, motorcycle or car trips across the island. If you would rather be free from the confines of land transport, the resort offers the perfect starting point for boat trips along the coast.
Treats for the eyes and the palate
From Krouzeri, you can visit other inland towns such as the historic Old Sinies, the quaint Nissaki, the charming Barbati or the lush Ipsos, which overlooks Mount Pantokrator. Many of these villages offer tavernas, bars, shops and restaurants that serve local and international cuisine.
Scattered throughout the island are various restaurants and bistros. An institution among waterside tavernas is Fagopotion, located in the heart of Ágios Stéfanos Sinión. A few of the must-try dishes include their signature three-cheese saganaki, rabbit stew and the succulent, melt-in-your-mouth octopus. Meanwhile, a favorite among tourists and locals alike, Salto Wine Bar Bistro in the Old Port offers superb specials with fish and shellfish all freshly caught that same day.
Viewing Corfu from the coast
A Corfu holiday is never complete without viewing the island from the turquoise Mediterranean waters and experiencing all of its coastal sights and sounds by boat. An abundant range of boat-rental companies throughout the island’s coast can cater to your island wanderlust. Boats and yachts are available for every budget, starting from 50 euros per day, with petrol charged separately.

Two New Villas to Try at Jamaica's Tryall Club
By the Caribbean Journal staff
Jamaica’s Tryall Club villa resort has added a pair of new luxury villas to its rental portfolio.
The Montego Bay-area property has added the hip four-bedroom Aqua Bay, along with the “timelessly elegant” Quinntessential [sic]” villa.
Each comes with its own private staff and unique amenities, from a gym with Peloton bikes to a putting green and a private pub.
Aqua Bay has four bedrooms, highlighted by its “Atlantis Suite,” with a veranda and a spa-like bathroom. Other features include a movie room, a private spa with two massage tables and a fire pit, among other amenities.
Quinntessential has five bedrooms, all of which face the ocean, along with a master suite that even has its own private plunge pool.
Guests of each villa can access all of the resort’s amenities, including its recently-renovated golf course, tennis club, private beach club and dining venues.
The Tryall Club is set on 2,200 acres in Montego Bay.
